How to Inspect your Oil

You probably want to get as much use out of your vehicle as possible. That means you need to make sure it has an appropriate oil level. In general, you need to change your oil at least once per year or every 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. At Lawrence Chevrolet, it would be our pleasure to help you find the right oil for your vehicle. We also love to teach our drivers about the cars they drive. What are some of the steps you need to follow if you want to inspect your oil? Learn more below and give us a call with any questions or concerns.

1. Ensure Your Car Is Safe to Check

First, you need to make sure it is safe for you to check your oil level. You need to make sure your car's engine is off. You also need to make sure the transmission is in the park. Ideally, you should put the emergency brake on as well. If you do not know how to put on the emergency brake, you should take a look at the manual. You must make sure your car does not move when you are inspecting the oil level.

2. Pop the Hood and Find the Dipstick

Next, you need to open the hood of your car. Generally, there will be a lever to release the hood near the dashboard or driver’s seat. Pop the hood, lift it up, and make sure you deploy the rod to keep the hood up. Most cars have a stick you can slide into the hood to prevent it from falling on you when you are checking your oil. You also need to find the dipstick, as that is what you will use to check the oil level. Generally, it has a lightly colored handle, such as yellow or orange. It might also have an oil can symbol on it.

3. Get the Towel or Rag Ready

Go ahead and deploy the dipstick. When you take a look at it, you should see two separate lines. The first line, lower on the rod, is the line that indicates that the oil level is low. Then, the upper line represents a full tank. If the oil is at that level, it means that the oil level is full. You should also get a towel or rag ready to wipe off the dipstick after checking the oil.

4. Insert the Dipstick

Now, insert the dipstick into the oil canister. Try not to insert the dipstick too quickly, and make sure it is even when you slide it in. Push the dipstick all the way to the bottom. You might even feel the dipstick hit the bottom of the oil canister. Then, withdraw the dipstick slowly. Examine the tip, and make sure you can clearly see the oil level. As long as the oil level is somewhere in between the two lines, it means that you have enough oil in your vehicle. If the oil level is below the bottom line, it means that it is time for you to add more oil to it.

5. Clean Up and Close the Hood

If the oil level is low, you need to add more oil, which means it is time for you to call Lawrence Chevrolet to make an appointment. Before you do so, clean up. Dry off the dipstick, put it away, and make sure the oil canister is sealed. Then, close the hood and make sure it latches. If you have questions about what type of oil is best for your vehicle, our team can help you!

Top 5 Advanced Safety Features of the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox

If you’re looking for an SUV you can trust, the Chevy Equinox is a desirable option because it puts safety features first by providing a suite of standard and available safety features. These features help drivers make smarter decisions, and while these technologies are not a replacement for a driver’s caution and care, safety-conscious buyers love knowing that they have extra layers of protection. While the Equinox has a bunch of outstanding safety features, five stand out to make the Chevrolet Equinox a dominant vehicle on the market. 1. Front and Rear Park Assist With front and rear park assist, your vehicle will alert you if it detects that objects are nearby in your front or rear. This feature makes parking in tight spots less stressful and prevents collisions. This feature relies on ultrasonic sensors, which can sense up to 6 feet away from your vehicle. You can also use the Rear Park Assist System to switch this feature on or off as you please, so you’re always empowered to drive in ways that most suit you. This feature will also use different beeps depending on distance so that you can easily tell where you are in relation to other objects around you. You hear more beeps as you get closer to an object. If you have a Safety Alert Seat, you will feel sensations on the seat, depending on the setting you have. 2. Rear Vision Camera While the park assist features are exciting when it comes to safety, sometimes its nice to get a visual on what’s happening in your rear. The rear vision camera allows you to see exactly what’s in your rear, so you can better navigate situations. The rear camera gives you an HD digital image of the area behind your vehicle whenever you are in reverse. Thus, you can see other vehicles, objects, people, and animals. You can also choose to see an overlay of where your vehicle is heading. 3. Adaptive Cruise Control When you use adaptive cruise control, your vehicle can adapt speed and follow a detected vehicle based on the gap the driver selects. When there is no vehicle in front of you, adaptive cruise control is just like regular cruise control. While some people don’t like to give up any control of the car, this feature allows drivers to step in and take control of the vehicle at any moment. Driver demands are still a top priority and drivers still need to be diligently paying attention to the road. Drivers can use this feature and turn it on or off using the cruise control button on the steering wheel, and they can set the cruise speed and gap that will keep them driving smoothly and safely. Chevy even has tech that allows the vehicle to adapt to nearby speed limit signs, but your vehicle needs Traffic Sign Recognition to do this. 4. Lane Keep Assist Especially when you’ve been in the car for a while, you may find yourself drifting out of your lane, and Chevy’s Lane Keep Assist helps drivers stay in their lane by using the steering wheel to gently alert drivers if it senses they are going past the lane lines. While this sort of reaction may seem annoying if you change lanes often, it is designed not to respond to normal lane changes. When you use your turn signal, the vehicle knows that you are intentionally leaving the lane and does not alert you. If you forget to signal often, the Chevy Equinox will help you learn to get out of that habit! 5. Teen Driver Technology For families, having teen driver technology may be important as kids get older and learn to drive. This tech helps teens learn safe habits that they can continue to have for the rest of their lives. It can be stressful to let your teen out into the world when you’re not there, but the teen driver system can help you set speed alerts, volume limits, and will even give an in-vehicle report card.
