How to Save Money when Buying Gas

Whether you’re commuting to and from work or you’re headed across the country on a road trip, it’s important to save money on gas. Fueling up your tank is more expensive than ever – but there are quite a few creative ways for you to save some gas money along the way.

Use Gas Apps

A variety of gas apps can help you to locate the gas station with the cheapest price per gallon. Some of the apps you may want to install onto your smartphone include:

  • GasBuddy
  • Waze
  • Gas Guru

The app will look at your location and show you the prices of all of the stations near you. If you’re willing to drive a few miles out of your way, it can end up saving you $0.20 or more per gallon – and that can add up dramatically.

The apps are free to use, so they can help you to keep your costs as low as possible.

Explore Shopping Rewards

Various grocery stores offer shopping rewards. Every time you buy groceries, you earn points that can save you on filling up at their gas stations. Kroger and Winn Dixie are known to have some of the best fuel rewards, but you’ll want to look at what’s available near you. If you buy enough groceries over the course of a month, it can be a savings of up to $1 per gallon – and that can be a savings of $20 or more on a complete fill-up.

BP, Chevron, and other gas stations have their own reward programs, too. It can save you per gallon as well as provide you with other rewards – free coffee, hot dogs, and other items inside of their stores.

Apply for a Gas Card

Many credit cards have rewards associated with them. The more you spend on the card, the more rewards you earn.

Quite a few banks offer gas-specific rewards. It can help you to earn gift cards at your favorite gas stations as you spend on your credit card.

You don’t have to get into credit card debt just to take advantage of these deals, either. Simply set up a few recurring expenses to hit the card, such as your cell phone bill and your cable bill or streaming apps. Then, pay the balance off at the end of every month.

Depending on how much you spend on the card each month, you could be looking at a $25 gift card on a regular basis.

Maintain Your Car

Your engine needs to run efficiently – and if it is properly maintained, you can be sure that you’re getting the desired fuel efficiency. If your engine oil is dirty or your fuel filter isn’t keeping the fuel clean, you’re going to run into problems. Your engine won’t perform the way it should, and you’ll find that you’re using more gas to go everywhere.

There are a few things that you’ll want to do periodically to maintain your car’s fuel efficiency:

  • Schedule oil changes based on the recommendations of your owner’s manual
  • >Have your fuel filter inspected periodically

An overall inspection of your car can also catch other issues. If you have found your fuel efficiency to be dramatically lower than it used to be, there may be issues with the fuel injectors or the oxygen sensors of the engine.

Schedule Your Service Appointment

It’s important to do everything you can to save gas. Even when you’re buying from the cheapest gas station in town and using all of the benefits around, you need to make sure your vehicle is using gas appropriately.
